Q: Hi Natasha—don’t feel compelled to answer this, as I know you must have way better things to do with your time, BUT if you do have an extra thirty seconds, tell me: what are the best exhibitions to see in New York right now? I am about to fly to NYC (I have not been in many years!) and I would love to fill my time with gallery visits over the next two days.
A: Here’s what I’ve seen and enjoyed lately, although I’m far from caught up with what is showing right now.
Christopher Wool at 101 Greenwich Street—the exhibition is now closed unless you can get tickets to the play being put on in the space, Buildings I & II by Richard Maxwell, which is also incredible. There are no upcoming dates, but hopefully some will be added.
Samuel Hindolo at Buchholz on 82nd Street and at 15 Orient’s new location at 72 Walker Street. The TriBeCa space itself put me in a good mood.
Jacob Kassay at Mister Fahrenheit on West 10th Street.
Beaux Mendes at Miguel Abreu on Eldridge Street.
Camille Henrot, Tymor Postovyï, and Michael Dean at at Amity on Canal Street, by appointment only but worth it, and Ulrik is in the same building.
Teak Ramos at Ulrik on Canal Street. Okay, I haven’t seen this show in person yet, but I went to the after party for the opening and everyone was excited by it.
Jenna Bliss at Amant in Bushwick. I have not seen this work in this space, but I have seen all of what is showing here before, in other spaces.
K8 Hardy at OCD Chinatown.
Klara Liden at Reena Spaulings Fine Art.
Not a gallery show, but La Musica, a 1966 film version of Marguerite Duras’s play of the same name (directed by Duras and Paul Séban), is playing at BAM on October 10th at 4:15pm. I saw it on Sunday, with a delightful 1984 Chantal Akerman short, J’ai faim, j’ai froid.
It looks like I saw the second-to-last performance of Meredith Monk’s Indra’s Net at the Park Avenue Armory, but perhaps more dates will be added, as it was very popular.
As always, please reply to this email if you have a question you’d like me to answer in newsletter form.
