From the archive
Dazed started a feature on their website called “Archive Pull” and recently added an interview between Lana Del Rey and Courtney Love from 2017 to it, setting off my Google alerts. I moderated this talk over the phone, then edited and wrote the introduction to the text, a dream I never even knew I had, bringing my two favorite musical artists together and allowing me to listen in on their casual conversation from my bedroom one night seven years ago.
Lana, who is half a year older than me (happy belated birthday), was my relatively new obsession, and Courtney had been my idol since I was a pre-teen (memories of annoying my family by playing all her albums too much, reading the liner notes, her published diaries, and the autobiography, taping pictures of her to my walls, hand-making Hole t-shirts with those printout iron-on transfers), yet I hadn’t expected the two of them to be fans of one another’s music, much less get along.
One could hear, through their own real voices, though, that they really did. The call was late at night for me due to a time difference but I wanted it to go on forever, to fall asleep to their live chatter in my ear, as if it was a collaborative album (which still hasn’t happened). I think the story holds up.
