Movies, Movies, Movies
Clean, Shaven (1993) is a cool and moving portrait of a person who has lost his mind, but without the fisheye, fast-motion flourishes that the 90s are known for. It’s one of those movies that makes me feel like I’m in high school again, wondering if anyone will ever really get me.
Wild and Wonderful (1964) has absolutely everything, and yet it isn’t considered a classic, maybe because it got bad press, maybe because its star, Tony Curtis, had left his wife at the time, Janet Leigh, for its other star, 18-year-old Christine Kaufmann (Tony was 20 years older than Christine and only 2 years older than Janet). Anyway, by “everything” I mean a standard poodle named Monsieur Cognac with a drinking problem and a penchant for pranks who is a television personality beloved by all of France, of course.
Have you all seen My Man Godfrey (1936)? I hadn’t even heard of it until I read a few of the Criterion Collection’s guest recommendations. A great deal of actors and directors have put it on their all time top ten list. Now that I’ve seen it, I would add it to mine, too, even if that makes me look unoriginal. Isn’t it incredible that I may not have seen my favorite movie ever yet?
