Last week, I was in Mexico. I unintentionally read two Prohibition-era New York stories back to back just before and while there: Nathanael West’s Miss Lonelyhearts (1933) and Ursula Parrott’s Ex Wife (1929), both brilliant and devastating in very different ways.
